Science and Foundation Subjects

Science and foundation subjects each have their own Programme of Study, which sets out the curriculum map for each subject and progression in skills and knowledge from Early Years to the end of Key Stage 2 and children’s year 7 destinations. In Early Years, the teaching of this knowledge and skills is through the Early Years Educational Programmes.

Early Years >

Key Stage 1

In Key Stage 1, the approach to the curriculum, beyond the teaching of English and mathematics, is to move from our Early Years continuous provision, ’planning in the moment’ model (see Early Years Policy) to a cross-curricular model that is led by the acquisition of skills and concepts required to access the key stage 2 curriculum and a knowledge base that is set out in our Curriculum Map. Each subject Programme of Study gives teachers clear end of phase outcomes for all subjects.

Each half-term, teachers create cross-curricular plans around themes based on the Key Stage 1 Curriculum document to incorporate the skills and concepts from each subject.

In key stage 1, some subjects are taught discretely, particularly when we take advantage of specialist teachers and instructors. English, mathematics, PE and sports, some science, music and computer science are all taught discretely.

Key Stage 2

In key stage 2, we operate a subject based teaching model. The Key Stage 2 Curriculum Map sets out the study units for each subject; teachers weave the study units into plans for the year. Each subject has a programme of study, which summarises the content of each unit of work and sets out the key knowledge and vocabulary to be taught. It is through the programmes of study that we ensure progression from unit to unit within each subject.
