Policy Statement for Mathematics

In our teaching of mathematics, we aim to build confidence and competence in mathematics, no matter at what point children are starting.

We use White Rose Maths as the basis for the structure and delivery of our mathematics curriculum from Reception to year 6. Home learning is supported by White Rose Maths and Carol Vorderman's 'Maths Factor'. Parents are able to find out what topics we are studying through their class’ term-on-a-page.

The structure and pedagogy of White Rose Mathematics is used to frame and support our mathematics curriculum. Teachers use the resources available from the programme, adapting and adding to them to meet the needs of their class. Lessons have a daily emphasis on developing an understanding of number and counting, mental mathematics and, in key stage 2, written calculations. Our Calculations Policy sets out clearly the written methods that we teach the children and our end of year expectations. Children's understanding of mathematics is underpinned by the use of concrete and pictorial apparatus and images at all stages in order to develop abstract thinking and understanding.

On a daily basis, we encourage our children to ask questions, discuss their work and explain their thinking, tackle problems and, through perseverance, use what they know to find an accurate answer. We believe that children should not only feel confident in their number work but they should also be able to apply it to different contexts and problems.

Through these approaches, we believe that:

Everyone can do maths!

Our Schools

Synergy Multi-Academy Trust comprises fifteen Norfolk schools serving children between the ages of 2 and 18. Our schools work collaboratively together to raise standards and provide education of the highest possible standard, offering the best of opportunities for pupils. The Trust was initially established in 2015. We believe that all of our schools have strengths and areas to develop, and that all can improve through sharing expertise and wisdom. The Trust understands that there will be excellent practice in each school, and that every school will be able to contribute to the development of the Trust as a whole.
